Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Oncology
  • Maternal-Fetal Medicine

Background:

  • Cervical cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed during pregnancy, though it remains an unusual occurrence.
  • Abnormal Pap smears in pregnancy are more frequent and can often be managed conservatively.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To highlight the importance of diagnostic evaluation for abnormal Pap smears in pregnancy.
  • To discuss the management of cervical intraepithelial disease and invasive cervical cancer during pregnancy.

Main Methods:

  • Review of current literature and clinical guidelines regarding cervical cancer screening and management in pregnant patients.
  • Emphasis on the need for timely diagnostic evaluation of abnormal Pap smears.

Main Results:

  • Definitive treatment for intraepithelial cervical disease can often be deferred until after delivery.
  • Management of invasive cervical cancer is contingent upon the gestational age of the fetus.

Conclusions:

  • Pregnancy provides a critical opportunity for cervical neoplasia screening.
  • Prompt diagnostic evaluation and tailored management are essential for abnormal Pap smears and cervical cancer in pregnancy.
