Summary

Interferon monotherapy showed limited efficacy for chronic hepatitis C patients in Hungary. Combination therapy with ribavirin demonstrated improved sustained response rates, suggesting its benefit for this patient population.

Background:

  • Over 900 chronic hepatitis C patients in Hungary were evaluated over 5 years.
  • Unified diagnostic and therapeutic criteria were applied across 16 major hepatology centers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report clinical features of chronic hepatitis C patients.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of interferon therapy, including combination treatment.

Main Methods:

  • A total of 993 patients were included, with sustained efficacy assessed in 724.
  • Treatment evolved from 6-month interferon monotherapy to 12-month regimens and combination therapy with ribavirin.

Main Results:

  • Sustained response rates increased from 13% to 22% and finally to 36% with evolving treatment protocols.
