  • To present the institutional experience with hand-assisted laparoscopic radical nephrectomy (HALRN).
  • To compare the outcomes of HALRN with contemporary open radical nephrectomy.

  • A retrospective comparison was made with 18 matched open radical nephrectomies.

  • HALRN demonstrated significantly earlier return to work and 100% normal activity (P=0.04 and P=0.0002, respectively).

Conclusions:

  • HALRN is a safe and effective minimally invasive option for renal tumors.
  • HALRN is associated with shorter hospital stays, earlier return to work, and faster recovery than open radical nephrectomy.
