Summary

Multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) objectively monitors visual function after rhegmatogenous retinal detachment surgery. mfERG reveals reduced retinal response densities in both detached and reattached areas, indicating functional changes.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Retinal Imaging
  • Visual Electrophysiology

Background:

  • Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) is a serious condition requiring surgical intervention.
  • Evaluating visual function post-RRD surgery is crucial for assessing treatment outcomes.
  • Objective electrophysiological methods can provide insights into retinal function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the visual function in eyes that underwent surgery for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.
  • To evaluate the utility of multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) in monitoring post-RRD surgery visual function.

Main Methods:

  • Study included 15 patients treated for peripheral retinal detachment using the Lincoff-Custodis method.
  • Visual field testing was performed using the Humphrey Field Analyzer (30-2 program).

  • Multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) was recorded using the VERIS III system.
  • Main Results:

    • Significant reduction in retinal response densities observed in the detached retinal areas (1.3 +/- 0.7 nV/deg2).
    • A decrease in retinal response densities was also noted in the reattached retina (6.90 +/- 0.7 nV/deg2).
    • These findings suggest functional abnormalities persist even after successful reattachment.

    Conclusions:

    • Multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) serves as an objective tool for evaluating functional vision post-retinal detachment surgery.
    • mfERG can detect and quantify functional deficits in eyes operated for retinal detachment.
    • The study highlights the value of mfERG in the long-term monitoring of visual function after RRD repair.
