Nonsaphenous superficial venous reflux affects 10% of patients with chronic venous disease (CVD), predominantly women with multiple pregnancies. Understanding this reflux is crucial for effective treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Vascular Medicine
  • Phlebology
  • Diagnostic Imaging

Background:

  • Limited data exists on nonsaphenous superficial venous reflux.
  • This study investigated the prevalence, risk factors, and clinical presentation of nonsaphenous venous reflux.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of reflux in nonsaphenous veins.
  • To explore associations with risk factors and signs/symptoms of chronic venous disease (CVD).

Main Methods:

  • Prospective data collection on 835 limbs from patients with CVD symptoms.
  • Color-flow duplex scanning was used to evaluate lower-limb veins for reflux.
  • Nonsaphenous reflux was defined in superficial veins outside the greater or lesser saphenous systems.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Nonsaphenous reflux was identified in 10% of limbs (84/835), primarily in women (67/72).
  • Higher mean pregnancies (3.2) were noted in patients with nonsaphenous reflux compared to saphenous reflux (2.2).
  • Most affected limbs (90%) were classified as CVD classes 1-3, with 80% experiencing symptoms.

Conclusions:

  • Nonsaphenous reflux prevalence was 10% in this practice, strongly associated with female sex and parity.
  • The majority of cases presented with early-stage CVD signs and symptoms.
  • Detailed anatomical assessment using color-flow duplex scanning is vital due to unusual venous patterns.
