Solitary epididymal schistosomiasis
Canadian Journal of Surgery. Journal Canadien De Chirurgie
|September 1, 1975
Summary
A rare case of epididymal schistosomiasis, likely caused by Schistosoma haematobium, was diagnosed in a 54-year-old man. Surgical excision is recommended to prevent epididymal dysfunction.
Area of Science:
- Urology
- Parasitology
- Pathology
Background:
- Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by flatworms of the Schistosoma genus.
- Epididymal involvement is an extremely rare manifestation of schistosomiasis.
Observation:
- A 54-year-old male presented with a month-long history of painless right testicular swelling.
- Initial differential diagnoses included sperm granuloma, leiomyoma, or adenomatoid tumor of the epididymis.
Findings:
- Histologic examination revealed Schistosoma haematobium infection of the epididymis.
- This represents one of only three reported cases of solitary epididymal schistosomiasis.
- Preoperative diagnosis of epididymal schistosomiasis has not been previously achieved due to its rarity.
Implications:
- Chemotherapy alone may not prevent epididymal dysfunction due to scarring from schistosomiasis.
- Surgical excision of the affected lesion is recommended to preserve epididymal function.
- Increased awareness of this rare presentation may aid in earlier diagnosis and management.
