Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Pathology
  • Immunohistochemistry
  • Bovine Tuberculosis

Background:

  • Tuberculosis remains a significant global disease affecting various animal species.
  • Generalized tuberculosis in young calves presents diagnostic challenges.
  • Understanding the pathomorphological and immunohistochemical features is crucial for accurate diagnosis and control.

Observation:

  • A 45-day-old female calf presented with generalized natural tuberculosis.
  • Characteristic productive lesions were observed in the lungs, liver, and multiple lymph nodes.
  • Affected lymph nodes included mediastinal, bronchial, mesenteric, portal, prescapular, renal, and caudal sternal nodes.

Findings:

  • Immunohistochemistry revealed Mycobacterium bovis antigens primarily within the cytoplasm and surrounding macrophages.
  • Antigens were occasionally detected in necrotic areas and Langhans giant cells.
  • The avidin-biotin complex peroxidase method was employed for antigen visualization.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of thorough pathological examination in young animals with suspected tuberculosis.
  • Immunohistochemistry aids in confirming Mycobacterium bovis presence and localization.
  • Findings contribute to the understanding of bovine tuberculosis pathogenesis and diagnostic approaches.
