Abstract:
The middle ear plays a key role in the transmission of the sound vibrations from the tympanic drum to the inner ear. The author makes a survey of our current understanding of the maintain of air-filled cavities: muco-ciliary clearance, control of water flux across the mucosa, role of the Eustachian tube. Pathophysiology of the middle ear is primarily concerned with the major changes which occur in the middle ear in the course of secretory otitis media. These changes will allow the development of the various forms of chronic otitis media.
