Background:

Eating disorders in children and adolescents require specialized, integrated care.
A continuum of care model is essential for effective treatment across different levels of severity.
Early intervention and prevention strategies are crucial for long-term outcomes.

Observation:

A pilot program was developed and implemented to address the comprehensive treatment needs of pediatric patients with eating disorders.
The program utilized a multidisciplinary team approach, integrating various specialties.
Data collection focused on treatment outcomes and program utilization.

Findings:

The pilot program demonstrated success in providing comprehensive care for children and adolescents with eating disorders.
The inpatient eating disorder census remained low, averaging 4 patients (range 1-10) as of November 2000.
The program successfully integrated prevention and early intervention strategies.

Implications:

This model of care can be effectively implemented in clinical settings to improve outcomes for pediatric eating disorders.
Continued public and provider education is vital for early identification and intervention.
Further research should explore long-term efficacy and scalability of such programs.
