Summary

Ultrasonic contrast agents aid blood flow assessment. However, the linear and time-invariant system assumption for blood mixing chambers is invalid, limiting quantitative flow estimation.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Fluid Dynamics

Background:

  • Ultrasonic contrast agents enhance blood's acoustic properties for flow analysis.
  • The time-intensity method, based on indicator-dilution theory, is commonly used.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To test the hypothesis that blood mixing chambers behave as linear and time-invariant (LTI) systems.
  • To evaluate the validity of LTI assumptions in ultrasonic contrast agent studies.

Main Methods:

  • Investigated the linear relationship between contrast agent concentration and backscattered intensity.
  • Assessed the dependence of time constants on concentration.
  • Introduced and evaluated the concept of effective mixing volume.
  • Conducted extensive in vitro experiments using two flow models and two contrast agents.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • The linear and time-invariant (LTI) system assumption for blood mixing chambers was found to be invalid.
  • Quantitative flow estimation using standard deconvolution techniques is generally not possible.
  • The relationship between contrast agent concentration and backscattered intensity was examined.

Conclusions:

  • The LTI assumption is not applicable to blood mixing chambers in this context.
  • While quantitative flow estimation is limited, relative flow rate measurements are still feasible using indicator-dilution theory.
