Summary

The Mack Complex Figure Test (CFT) is a viable alternative to the Rey CFT for assessing constructional skills and visual-spatial memory. Both tests showed similar accuracy in adults, regardless of sleep apnea status.

Area of Science:

  • Neuropsychology
  • Cognitive Neuroscience
  • Psychometrics

Background:

  • Equivalent versions of the Complex Figure Test (CFT) are crucial for longitudinal studies to minimize practice effects.
  • The Rey CFT is a standard tool for assessing constructional skills, planning, spatial organization, and visual-spatial memory.
  • A need exists for an equivalent CFT version to the Rey to enhance research flexibility.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the Rey CFT and the Mack CFT as equivalent measures of cognitive function.
  • To evaluate the Mack CFT's utility as an alternative to the Rey CFT.
  • To assess the impact of sleep apnea on CFT performance.

Main Methods:

  • A study involving 245 adults compared copy and delayed recall accuracy scores of the Rey and Mack CFTs.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Participants included individuals with and without sleep apnea.
  • Correlations between demographic factors, estimated IQ, and CFT scores were analyzed.
  • Main Results:

    • No significant differences in accuracy scores were found between the Rey and Mack CFTs for copy or recall.
    • Sleep apnea status did not significantly affect CFT accuracy scores.
    • Demographic factors and estimated IQ showed similar correlations with both CFTs.

    Conclusions:

    • The Mack CFT demonstrates comparable performance to the Rey CFT.
    • The Mack figure is a potentially useful alternative to the Rey CFT for assessing constructional abilities and visual-spatial memory.
    • This finding supports the use of the Mack CFT in neuropsychological assessments, particularly in longitudinal studies.
