Area of Science:

  • Biomechanics
  • Medical Engineering
  • Orthopedics

Background:

  • Gait analysis is crucial for assessing motor function.
  • Accurate measurement of footfall timing and speed is essential for clinical evaluation.
  • Existing methods may have limitations in specific patient populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present and validate a novel gait analysis technique.
  • To assess the system's accuracy and repeatability.
  • To evaluate its utility in orthopedic patients, specifically children with cerebral palsy.

Main Methods:

  • Development of a gait analysis system comprising a transmitter, receiver, conductive walkway, and PC software.
  • Initial accuracy and repeatability testing with known signals.

  • Main Results:

    • The technique demonstrated accuracy and repeatability comparable to literature values in healthy adults.
    • Measurements in children with cerebral palsy showed the system's validity for orthopedic patients.
    • The system proved efficient for functional evaluation of post-operative gait improvement.

    Conclusions:

    • The presented gait analysis technique is valid and reliable.
    • It is effective for assessing gait in orthopedic patients, including children with cerebral palsy.
    • The system provides valuable data for evaluating surgical outcomes and functional recovery.
