Summary

High-functioning autistic adolescents showed intact semantic priming effects for common words. However, unique correlations with nonverbal cognition suggest potentially different semantic processing in autism.

Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Neurodevelopmental Disorders

Background:

  • Semantic memory underpins conceptual relationships.
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) may involve differences in cognitive processing.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate conceptual relationships in semantic memory in high-functioning autistic adolescents.
  • To compare semantic priming effects between autistic adolescents and neurotypical controls.

Main Methods:

  • Indirect priming technique with single-word primes and word fragment completion tasks.
  • Participants included high-functioning autistic adolescents and age/IQ-matched controls.

Main Results:

  • Both groups exhibited similar semantic priming effects for simple, common words.

Related Experiment Videos

  • A significant correlation between priming performance and nonverbal cognition was found exclusively in the autistic group.
  • Conclusions:

    • Autistic adolescents demonstrate intact conceptual relationships for basic semantic priming.
    • Qualitative differences in semantic processing may exist in autism, potentially linked to nonverbal cognitive abilities.
