Summary

Right-sided colonic diverticulitis mimics appendicitis and cholecystitis but CT scans can accurately diagnose it. Early CT diagnosis prevents unnecessary surgery for this self-limiting condition.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Radiology
  • Abdominal Imaging

Background:

  • Right-sided colonic diverticulitis is rare but clinically significant.
  • It often presents symptoms similar to acute appendicitis and cholecystitis.
  • Accurate diagnosis is crucial to avoid misdiagnosis and inappropriate surgical intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the computed tomography (CT) findings of right-sided colonic diverticulitis.
  • To enhance radiologist awareness of this uncommon condition.
  • To highlight the role of CT in differentiating it from other acute abdominal pathologies.

Main Methods:

  • This is a pictorial essay.
  • It focuses on reviewing and illustrating CT imaging features.
  • No patient data or statistical analysis was performed.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • CT demonstrates characteristic findings of right-sided colonic diverticulitis.
  • These findings aid in distinguishing it from appendicitis and cholecystitis.
  • CT allows for prompt and accurate diagnosis.

Conclusions:

  • Computed tomography (CT) is a valuable tool for diagnosing right-sided colonic diverticulitis.
  • Recognizing CT findings can prevent unnecessary laparotomies.
  • This condition is typically benign and managed medically.
