Ventricular compliance and ageing.

C Sebban, D Job, J L Caen

    Summary

Aging reduces right ventricular compliance, impairing diastolic filling and lowering cardiac output in older adults. No direct link was found with systolic performance, possibly due to adaptive changes.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Gerontology
    • Physiology

    Background:

    • Aging is associated with cardiovascular changes.
    • Right ventricular function is crucial for cardiac output.
    • Ventricular compliance affects diastolic filling.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between right ventricular compliance and cardiac function in aged subjects.
    • To determine the impact of reduced ventricular compliance on diastolic filling and cardiac output.
    • To explore the association between ventricular compliance and systolic performance in the elderly.

    Main Methods:

    • Studied 29 aged subjects without overt heart failure.
    • Assessed right ventricular compliance.
    • Evaluated diastolic filling and cardiac output.
    • Examined systolic performance.

    Main Results:

    • A loss of ventricular compliance was observed in aged subjects.
    • Impaired diastolic filling was linked to reduced cardiac output.
    • No significant relationship was found between ventricular compliance and systolic performance.

    Conclusions:

    • Reduced right ventricular compliance in aging impairs diastolic filling and cardiac output.
    • Contractile adaptation may mask a relationship between ventricular compliance and systolic performance in older adults.
    • Understanding these age-related changes is vital for cardiovascular health in the elderly.
