[Posterior open inguinal hernia repair--surgical technique]

35 patients with inguinal hernias have been operated on conventionally through the posterior approach. A non-absorbable prosthesis (10 x 15 cm) has been used to treat the hernia. The technique of the operation has been described. This method has been employed in the cases of hernias large in size and also in incarcerated and scrotal hernias (III of the Schumpelick classification). The operation can be performed under general or spinal anesthesia. Separating the inguinal region from the abdominal cavity by proper preparation makes prosthesis implantation also useful in the treatment of incarcerated hernias where the resection of necrotic intestine is essential.
