Summary

Young children who read more books weekly show a higher risk of myopia. This study in Singapore highlights the link between reading habits and early-onset myopia in 7-9 year olds.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Pediatric Ophthalmology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a growing global health concern.
  • Understanding risk factors for early-onset myopia is crucial for intervention.
  • Nearwork activities are suspected contributors to myopia development.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between nearwork activities and myopia in young elementary school children in Singapore.
  • To quantify the relationship between reading habits and myopia prevalence.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 1005 children aged 7-9 years in Singapore.
  • Measurements included cycloplegic autorefraction, keratometry, and biometry.
  • Parental questionnaires assessed nearwork (reading, computer, video games), socioeconomic status, and light exposure.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Higher myopia (≥ -3.0 D) was significantly associated with reading more than two books per week (OR = 3.05, 95% CI: 1.80-5.18).
  • Reading duration (>2 hours/day) and diopter hours (>8) were not significantly associated with higher myopia after controlling for confounding factors.
  • Socioeconomic factors also showed associations with myopia.

Conclusions:

  • Increased reading exposure is linked to myopia in young children (7-9 years).
  • The association between reading and myopia in this cohort appears stronger than in older populations.
  • Further research is needed to confirm if this indicates early-onset myopia or other confounding factors.
