Day-case ureteroscopy is a successful outpatient procedure for diagnosing and managing ureteric diseases like urolithiasis. With appropriate protocols, few patients require hospitalization, demonstrating its efficiency in day-surgery settings.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Surgical Procedures

Background:

  • Increasing resource limitations necessitate efficient surgical practices.
  • Day-surgery settings are increasingly utilized for various medical procedures.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the outcomes of day-case ureteroscopy for ureteric disease.
  • To evaluate the feasibility of performing ureteroscopy in an outpatient setting.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 63 day-case ureteroscopies performed between May 1995 and May 2000.
  • Suitability for day-surgery was based on anesthetic and social factors, not urological criteria.
  • Outcomes included immediate/delayed admissions and inpatient management.

Main Results:

  • 98% stone clearance achieved in 54 urolithiasis cases.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Most patients (56) were discharged with a JJ stent.
  • Nine patients required immediate admission (mostly for pain), and seven required delayed admission (for stent issues or infection).
  • Conclusions:

    • Ureteroscopy is effective as a planned day-case procedure in dedicated units.
    • Few patients require hospitalization following outpatient ureteroscopy.
    • Analgesia protocols and antibiotic prophylaxis may reduce post-procedure admissions.
