Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Neuropathology
  • Medical Technology

Context:

  • Stereotactic biopsy is a neurosurgical procedure for diagnosing brain lesions.
  • Accurate intra-operative diagnosis is crucial for guiding patient treatment.
  • The Riechert-Mundinger stereotactic device was utilized in this study.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the reliability and precision of intra-operative stereotactic biopsy for brain lesions.
  • To assess the diagnostic accuracy of cytological smear examination compared to histological analysis.
  • To determine the impact of rapid morphological diagnosis on treatment strategies.

Summary:

  • 65 patients with brain lesions underwent stereotactic biopsy between October 1998 and August 2000.
  • Intra-operative diagnosis was performed using cytological smears, with subsequent confirmation via H&E, selective stains, and immunohistochemistry on paraffin-embedded specimens.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The stereotactic biopsy method, utilizing the Riechert-Mundinger device, demonstrated high reliability and precision in morphological diagnosis.
  • Impact:

    • This diagnostic approach enables prompt and accurate identification of brain lesion types.
    • Facilitates the timely initiation of appropriate and individualized treatment plans for patients.
    • Highlights the value of integrated cytological and histological analysis in neuro-oncology.
