Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Pleural malignant mesothelioma (PMM) is a rare cancer, typically presenting as diffuse or multiple nodules.
  • Localized PMM is exceptionally rare, with only seven prior cases documented in medical literature.

Observation:

  • A 61-year-old woman, with no smoking or asbestos history, presented with shoulder and arm pain.
  • Imaging revealed a solitary 5 cm mass in the right upper lung, extending into the thoracic wall.

Findings:

  • Pathology confirmed a localized malignant mesothelioma (epithelial type).
  • Immunohistochemistry showed positivity for cytokeratins, vimentin, and epithelial membrane antigen (EMA).
  • Flow cytometry indicated aneuploid DNA content.

Implications:

  • This case expands the understanding of rare localized PMM presentations.
  • Early diagnosis and surgical intervention are crucial for localized PMM.
  • The case underscores the importance of comprehensive diagnostic workup, including immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry.
