Summary

Leukemia risk is elevated in the rubber industry, particularly in inner tire tube manufacturing. Removing benzene alone may not fully mitigate this occupational health hazard.

Background:

  • The rubber industry has been linked to an increased risk of leukemia.
  • Solvent exposure, especially to benzene, was previously suspected as the primary cause.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between occupational exposure in a rubber plant and leukemia risk.
  • To assess leukemia risk in relation to specific work departments and exposure levels.

Main Methods:

  • A nested case-control study design was employed.
  • Data from 7 leukemia deaths and 28 matched controls (1973-1997) from a rubber plant cohort were analyzed.
  • Conditional logistic regression was used to assess leukemia risk, adjusting for non-occupational factors.

  • Working in the inner tire tube department for one or more years showed an odds ratio (OR) of 7.81 for leukemia.

Conclusions:

  • The inner tire tube department presents a significant leukemia risk due to widespread carcinogen exposure.
  • Eliminating benzene may not be sufficient to reduce leukemia risk in the rubber industry.
  • Further investigation into multiple carcinogens is warranted for effective risk management.
