Area of Science:

  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Gastrointestinal Surgery
  • Ambulatory Surgery

Context:

  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the preferred method for gallbladder removal.
  • Ambulatory settings are common in the US and Europe, but less established in France.
  • Previous studies focused on hospitalized patients, necessitating research on outpatient procedures.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the feasibility and outcomes of outpatient laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
  • To report the organization and results of the first 100 consecutive outpatient cases.
  • To assess the safety and efficacy of same-day discharge for cholecystectomy.

Summary:

  • A prospective trial included 100 patients undergoing outpatient laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
  • 27.4% of patients were treated on an ambulatory basis, with 72% requiring no post-operative medication.

Related Experiment Videos

  • 17 patients were admitted, with reasons including pre-operative decisions, intra-operative findings, and post-operative complications. Four patients were readmitted.
  • Impact:

    • Demonstrates that a significant proportion of patients can safely undergo laparoscopic cholecystectomy as day cases.
    • Highlights the importance of adequate organization, patient selection, and post-operative care protocols for successful ambulatory surgery.
    • Suggests that hospitalization is often unnecessary for laparoscopic cholecystectomy, improving resource utilization and patient convenience.
