Area of Science:

  • Pharmacology
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Cilansetron is a 5-HT3 antagonist developed by Solvay Pharmaceuticals.
  • It is intended for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate cilansetron as a potential treatment for non-constipated individuals with IBS.
  • To advance the development of a novel compound for gastrointestinal disorders.

Main Methods:

  • Cilansetron is currently undergoing Phase III clinical trials.
  • Regulatory submissions were anticipated in 2003.
  • A revised Phase III program focused on diarrhea-predominant IBS was initiated in July 2001.

Main Results:

  • Information on cilansetron's development and trial results remains limited, with most data available in abstract form.
  • Solvay Pharmaceuticals was actively seeking marketing partners for cilansetron in 2001.

Conclusions:

  • Cilansetron represents a novel class of compound prioritized by Solvay Pharmaceuticals.
  • The drug's development indicates a significant potential market, with predicted peak sales ranging from €100m to €1000m.
