Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Head and Neck Surgery
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Midline neck swellings commonly include thyroglossal cysts and aberrant thyroid tissue.
  • Accurate diagnosis is crucial for appropriate management of neck masses.

Observation:

  • A middle-aged woman presented with a thyroglossal swelling.
  • The swelling was diagnosed as autoimmune thyroiditis.

Findings:

  • Autoimmune thyroiditis is an uncommon cause of thyroglossal swelling.
  • This presentation is rare and requires careful diagnostic consideration.

Implications:

  • The differential diagnosis for thyroglossal tract swellings should include autoimmune thyroiditis.
  • Optimal management strategies for thyroglossal swellings need to consider this rare etiology.
