Proofreading

Synthesis of new DNA molecules starts when DNA polymerase links nucleotides together in a sequence that is complementary to the template DNA strand. DNA polymerase has a higher affinity for the correct base to ensure fidelity in DNA replication. Transcription01:10

Transcription

Overview
Transcription is the process of synthesizing RNA from a DNA sequence by RNA polymerase. It is the first step in producing a protein from a gene sequence. Additionally, many other proteins and regulatory sequences are involved in the proper synthesis of messenger RNA (mRNA). Regulation of transcription is responsible for the differentiation of all the different types of cells and often for the proper cellular response to environmental signals.

Proofreading

Synthesis of new DNA molecules is carried out by the enzyme DNA polymerase, which adds nucleotides on the daughter strand complementary to the template DNA strand. DNA polymerase has a higher affinity to add the correct base and ensures fidelity during DNA replication. Furthermore,  it exhibits proofreading activity during replication, using an exonuclease domain that cuts off incorrect nucleotides from the nascent DNA strand.

Components of Language01:24

Components of Language

Language, whether spoken, signed, or written, consists of specific components: lexicon and grammar. The lexicon is the vocabulary of a language, comprising its words. Grammar is the set of rules used to convey meaning through the lexicon. For example, English grammar adds “-ed” to most verbs to indicate past tense. Words are formed by combining phonemes, which are the basic sound units of a language. Different languages have different sets of phonemes (e.g., “ah” vs. “eh”). Phonemes combine to...
Correspondence Bias01:17

Correspondence Bias

Correspondence bias, also referred to as the fundamental attribution error, describes the tendency to attribute another person’s behavior to internal characteristics rather than situational influences. This cognitive bias leads individuals to overlook external factors that may be influencing actions, thereby fostering potentially inaccurate assessments of others’ intentions and dispositions.Empirical Evidence for Correspondence BiasResearch has consistently demonstrated the prevalence of...

Summary

Reading familiar texts changes how we process words. Familiarity reduces the difficulty of detecting letters in function words compared to content words, impacting reading patterns.

Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Reading Science
  • Visual Word Recognition

Background:

  • Reading involves processing both function words (e.g., 'the', 'of') and content words (e.g., 'house', 'run').
  • Letter detection tasks reveal processing differences between word types in unfamiliar text.
  • Familiarity with reading material is hypothesized to alter these processing patterns.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate how text familiarity influences letter detection for function versus content words.
  • To determine if the typical disadvantage in detecting letters in function words is modulated by material familiarity.

Main Methods:

  • Experiment 1: Compared letter detection in familiar (rehearsed) versus unfamiliar sentences.
  • Experiment 2: Compared letter detection in highly familiar verses (nursery rhymes) versus matched unfamiliar sentences.

  • Participants searched for target letters within the provided texts.
  • Main Results:

    • The typical disadvantage for function word letter detection in unfamiliar text was significantly reduced in familiar material.
    • Letter detection for content words worsened in familiar text.
    • Letter detection for function words showed a modest, non-significant improvement in familiar text.

    Conclusions:

    • Familiarity with text alters visual word recognition processes.
    • Parafoveal analysis may aid content word identification in highly familiar texts.
    • Reading familiar material shifts attentional focus, potentially increasing fixations on function words.
