Shoulder pain after laparoscopic cholecystectomy is not caused by residual CO2. Excessive traction on the triangular ligament and diaphragmatic stretching during insufflation are the primary culprits, impacting patient recovery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the mechanism of shoulder pain following laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC).
  • To differentiate between residual CO2 and insufflation-related factors as causes of post-LC shoulder pain.

Main Methods:

  • Ninety patients undergoing LC were randomized into three groups: no intervention, CO2 absorption, or O2 insufflation with CO2 absorption.
  • Pre- and post-procedure partial pressures of oxygen (PO2) and carbon dioxide (PCO2) were measured.
