Area of Science:

  • Surgical reconstruction techniques
  • Head and neck surgery
  • Otolaryngology

Background:

  • Gastric transposition and microvascular techniques are standard for pharyngoesophageal reconstruction.
  • Alternative methods are needed for patients with comorbidities or prior failures.
  • Local flaps offer a reliable reconstructive option in challenging cases.

Observation:

  • The Wookey flap technique, with an added delay stage, was used in six patients with complete circumferential pharyngoesophageal loss.
  • This retrospective review analyzed the outcomes of these reconstructions.

Findings:

  • Five of the six patients achieved successful pharyngoesophageal reconstruction.
  • All successful reconstructions enabled the resumption of oral alimentation.
