The role of BTA stat in clinical practice

The BTA stat urine test shows high sensitivity for bladder cancer detection but a high false positive rate in symptomatic patients. It is effective for bladder cancer surveillance in patients with a history of the disease.

- Urinary tract infections and calculi caused 62% of BTA stat false positives.
- Excluding UTI/calculi improved BTA stat specificity to 93.9%.
- In surveillance, BTA stat showed 100% specificity and 75% sensitivity versus VUC's 25%.
Conclusions:
- High false positive rates limit BTA stat for screening symptomatic patients.
- BTA stat shows promise for bladder cancer surveillance and screening high-risk asymptomatic individuals.
- Further trials are recommended to define BTA stat's role in surveillance.
