Summary

Hypertonic saline (HTS) irritates the nasal lining, causing mucus and a feeling of obstruction. This study shows HTS stimulates nerves and glands, leading to nasal narrowing, even when blood vessels are constricted.

Background:

  • Hypertonic saline (HTS) is known to irritate nasal mucosa, stimulating nerves and glandular secretion.
  • In individuals with asthma, HTS can lead to airflow obstruction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of HTS on nasal mucosal swelling using acoustic rhinometry (AcRh).
  • To control for potential vasodilator effects by pre-constricting nasal vessels with oxymetazoline (Oxy).

Main Methods:

  • Normal subjects underwent AcRh before and after nasal treatment with either oxymetazoline or saline.
  • Nasal provocation with escalating doses of HTS was administered, with AcRh measurements taken at intervals.
  • Key metrics included minimum cross-sectional area (Amin) and volume of the anterior nasal cavity (V6).
