Background:

  • Basilar artery (BA) stenting is a developing method for treating severe arteriosclerotic stenoses.
  • Limitations exist with current noninvasive follow-up techniques for BA interventions.

Observation:

  • Two patients with acute basilar artery occlusion secondary to thrombosis on severe stenoses underwent successful stenting.
  • Initial confirmation of stent placement was achieved via angiography.
  • Follow-up assessments utilized magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), computed tomographic angiography (CTA), and transcranial color-coded sonography (TCCS).

Findings:

  • Transcranial color-coded sonography (TCCS), performed via a transtemporal window, successfully monitored BA patency post-stenting.

Related Experiment Videos

  • In one case, contrast-enhanced ultrasound was required.
  • TCCS revealed orthograde flow in the distal BA without significant stenosis in both patients, indicating successful revascularization.
