Area of Science:

  • Microbiology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Critical Care Medicine

Context:

  • Acinetobacter species are significant nosocomial pathogens, frequently causing outbreaks in intensive care units.
  • Acinetobacter infections, primarily pneumonia in mechanically ventilated patients, pose a growing clinical challenge.

Purpose:

  • To investigate the virulence of clinical Acinetobacter isolates using a mouse model of systemic infection.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of antibiotics, including Sulbactam, in treating Acinetobacter pneumonia in a mouse model.

Summary:

  • Clinical Acinetobacter isolates exhibit multi-drug resistance, complicating treatment options.
  • Animal models, specifically mouse models, are crucial for understanding Acinetobacter physiopathology, pharmacology, and therapeutic efficacy.
