Summary

Taichiquan (TCQ) exercise immediately enhances heart rate variability (HRV) in both older men and young students. This study observed increased HRV after TCQ practices, suggesting potential cardiovascular benefits.

Background:

  • Heart rate variability (HRV) is a key indicator of autonomic nervous system function and cardiovascular health.
  • Taichiquan (TCQ), a traditional Chinese mind-body exercise, is increasingly studied for its health benefits.
  • Limited research exists on the immediate effects of TCQ on HRV in different age groups.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the acute effects of Taichiquan (TCQ) practice on heart rate variability (HRV) in elderly men and young adults.
  • To compare HRV responses to TCQ exercise between older and younger male populations.

Main Methods:

  • Participants included 15 elderly men and 14 young male physical education students.
  • Electrocardiograms (ECGs) were recorded in a supine position before and after two series of TCQ practices.

  • Heart rate and HRV parameters, including RR intervals (RRIs), standard deviation of NN intervals (SDNN), and total variance (TV), were calculated.
