  • A visual search paradigm was employed, presenting four letter targets twice with a 250 ms gap.
  • Participant performance determined stimulus duration for individual change detection thresholds.
  • The effect of cue conditions on change detection was assessed in a second phase.

  • Children detected changes at a 71% correct rate, with a mean presentation duration of 0.91 seconds.
  • Older children were not significantly faster at detecting changes than younger children.
  • An upper visual field advantage for change detection was observed in un-cued trials.

Conclusions:

  • Masking from target reappearance likely interferes with change detection, particularly in the lower visual field.
  • Greater dorsal pathway representation in the lower visual field may lead to increased masking.
  • These findings suggest a visual field asymmetry in change detection performance in children.
