Making healthy baby contests more objective.

Summary

The criteria for judging healthy baby contests were found to be objective, leading to more unbiased and easily accepted assessments. This improves the overall success of these community health events.

Background:

Healthy baby contests are common community events aimed at promoting child well-being.
Assessing the objectivity of judging criteria is crucial for the credibility and effectiveness of these contests.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the objectivity of criteria used in judging a healthy baby contest.
To determine if the chosen criteria provide an unbiased assessment of participants.

Main Methods:

A cross-sectional study was conducted at an Urban Health Centre in Pune.
Thirty-two children were selected from 998 screened participants for the contest.
A scoring system evaluated personal hygiene, growth, development, immunization status, and maternal knowledge.

Main Results:

High intraobserver correlation (rs = 0.85, p < 0.05) and interobserver correlation (rs = 0.92, p < 0.05) were observed.
The scoring system demonstrated significant reliability.
Contest scores were independent of the children's age.

Conclusions:

The criteria employed in the healthy baby contest were objective.
Objective criteria enhance the fairness, speed, and ease of participant assessment.
Improved objectivity leads to greater acceptance of contest results, increasing the success of healthy baby contests.
