Summary

Tiny infundibular cysts, not comedones, are the primary lesions in chloracne (a skin condition caused by chemical poisoning). This finding clarifies the histopathology of this systemic poisoning symptom.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatopathology
  • Toxicology
  • Histopathology

Background:

  • Chloracne is a skin condition resulting from systemic poisoning by specific halogenated aromatic compounds.
  • It is a symptom of poisoning, not solely a cutaneous disorder.

Observation:

  • A patient with severe chloracne presented with facial and axillary lesions.
  • Histopathologic examination of facial lesions revealed significant involvement of vellus hair follicles.

Findings:

  • Dilated infundibula filled with infundibular keratin or sebum were observed in vellus hair follicles.
  • Small infundibular cysts were more prevalent than comedones.
  • Hyperpigmentation was linked to increased melanin production and deposition within corneocytes.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • The study suggests that infundibular cysts are the fundamental lesions in chloracne.
  • This understanding aids in diagnosing and managing chloracne as a marker of systemic chemical exposure.
