    Summary

Implementing an armed robbery alarm system significantly increased on-scene apprehensions within stores. However, the system did not deter robberies or reduce crime city-wide, proving to be cost-ineffective.

    Area of Science:

    • Criminology
    • Applied Criminology
    • Crime Prevention Technology

    Background:

    • Armed robbery poses a significant threat to retail businesses.
    • Existing security measures often focus on deterrence rather than apprehension.
    • The need for effective technologies to apprehend armed robbers in real-time is critical.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the impact of an implemented armed robbery alarm system on apprehension rates and crime deterrence.
    • To assess the effectiveness of a cash-drawer-based alarm system linked directly to police.
    • To determine the cost-effectiveness and broader crime impact of the alarm system.

    Main Methods:

    • A quasi-experimental design using multiple baseline and reversal strategies was employed.
    • An armed robbery alarm system was installed in 48 retail stores across two geographical areas.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • The system utilized bait money in cash drawers to trigger direct alarms to police.
  • Main Results:

    • On-scene apprehensions of armed robbers within target stores increased significantly.
    • The alarm system did not deter robbery incidents or influence court dispositions.
    • No crime deterrence, displacement, or increased apprehensions were observed in surrounding areas or city-wide.

    Conclusions:

    • The armed robbery alarm system effectively increased immediate apprehensions within stores.
    • The system demonstrated poor cost-effectiveness and lacked broader crime deterrence capabilities.
    • Despite limitations, the program's continuation is noted due to the lack of alternative apprehension technologies.
