Age-discrepant unions are more common in cohabitations and remarriages than marriages in Canada. Increased age at union formation also raises the likelihood of age-heterogamous unions.

Area of Science:

  • Sociology of the family
  • Demography
  • Canadian social trends

Background:

  • Limited and outdated research exists on age-discrepant unions in Canada.
  • The increasing prevalence of nonmarital cohabitation necessitates its inclusion in family union studies.
  • Contemporary heterosexual unions require updated analysis of age-heterogamy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore the determinants of age-discrepant unions in Canada.
  • To analyze factors influencing age-heterogamy in marriages, cohabitations, and remarriages.
  • To update sociological understanding of heterosexual union formation.

Main Methods:

  • Multinomial logit modeling techniques were employed.
  • Data from the 1995 Canadian General Social Survey were utilized.
  • Analysis focused on heterosexual unions, including cohabitations.

Main Results:

  • Cohabitations and remarriages exhibit a higher likelihood of being age-discrepant compared to marriages.
  • An increasing age at union formation correlates with a greater probability of age-heterogamous unions.
  • Contrary to hypothesis, higher education for women was associated with a decreased likelihood (4%) of entering age-discrepant unions.

Conclusions:

  • Union type and age at formation are significant predictors of age-discrepancy.
  • The relationship between education and age-heterogamy differs by gender, particularly for women.
  • For women, increased education may enhance economic position, potentially leading to a preference for age-homogamous partners.
