Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Laparoscopic prostatectomy is gaining traction as an alternative to open surgery for localized prostate cancer.
  • Key treatment goals include cancer control and preserving urinary and sexual function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the current status and outcomes of laparoscopic prostatectomy in Japan.
  • To compare its efficacy against open prostatectomy regarding oncological and functional results.

Main Methods:

  • Review of over 250 laparoscopic prostatectomy cases in Japan.
  • Assessment of surgical outcomes including positive surgical margin rate, blood loss, and recovery.

Main Results:

  • Satisfactory results reported for positive surgical margin rate, bleeding volume, and urinary continence.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Challenges include long operative times and procedural difficulty.
  • Conclusions:

    • Laparoscopic prostatectomy demonstrates encouraging early outcomes in Japan.
    • Ongoing efforts aim to overcome surgical challenges and establish it as a standard treatment.
