Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Neurology
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • The Tinetti test is a standard qualitative tool for assessing elderly motor control.
  • Objective quantification is needed to enhance the Tinetti test's diagnostic accuracy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop objective quantification methods for the Tinetti test.
  • To assess the discriminatory power of trunk inclination parameters.

Main Methods:

  • Trunk inclination was measured using two inclinometers during the Tinetti test.
  • Descriptive parameters were computed and compared to normative data from 150 healthy subjects.
  • Parameters were analyzed in 130 institutionalized elderly individuals.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Statistical differences were observed in parameter distributions between normal subjects and institutionalized elderly individuals.
  • Trunk inclination parameters demonstrated discriminatory power in evaluating motor control.
  • This quantitative approach shows potential for objective assessment.

Conclusions:

  • Objective quantification of the Tinetti test using trunk inclination is feasible.
  • This method shows promise as a tool for evaluating motor control in neurological and geriatric populations.
  • Further research can refine this objective measurement for clinical application.
