Goniometry is a reliable method for measuring joint range of motion in Labrador Retrievers, with measurements comparable to radiography. Sedation did not affect joint motion measurements.
Area of Science:
- Veterinary Medicine
- Biomechanical Analysis
- Canine Orthopedics
Background:
- Accurate joint range of motion (ROM) assessment is crucial in veterinary orthopedics.
- Goniometry is a common clinical tool, but its reliability requires validation against objective measures.
- Sedation's potential impact on joint mobility needs consideration.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the reliability of goniometry for canine joint ROM.
- To compare goniometric measurements with radiographic measurements.
- To determine the effect of sedation on joint ROM in dogs.
Main Methods:
- Sixteen healthy adult Labrador Retrievers were studied.
- Three investigators independently measured carpus, elbow, shoulder, tarsus, stifle, and hip ROM using goniometry.
- Radiographs were taken during sedation; goniometric and radiographic measurements were compared.
Main Results:
- Goniometric and radiographic measurements showed no significant differences.
- Intra- and inter-investigator variability was low (1-6 degrees).
- Sedation did not significantly alter the range of motion for any evaluated joint.
Conclusions:
- Goniometry is a reliable and objective method for assessing joint ROM in healthy Labrador Retrievers.
- Radiographic measurements confirm the validity of goniometric assessments.
- Sedation does not confound joint ROM measurements in this population.
