Summary

Endoscopic thyroidectomy, using anterior chest or axillary approaches, offers fewer postoperative complaints and better cosmetic results than open surgery. The axillary approach provides superior cosmetic outcomes for patients undergoing thyroidectomy.

Background:

Comparison of endoscopic thyroidectomy (anterior chest and axillary approaches) with conventional open surgery.
Evaluation of surgical invasiveness and patient-reported outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the efficacy of endoscopic versus open thyroidectomy.
To compare postoperative complaints and cosmetic satisfaction between surgical methods.

Main Methods:

15 patients underwent each procedure: anterior chest endoscopic, axillary endoscopic, and open thyroidectomy.
Surgical outcomes and patient questionnaires were used for comparison.

Main Results:

Endoscopic procedures had longer operating times but similar postoperative pain compared to open surgery.

Endoscopic surgery resulted in fewer swallowing discomfort complaints.

Axillary endoscopic approach yielded superior cosmetic results; 20% of anterior chest and 73% of open surgery patients reported cosmetic dissatisfaction.

Conclusions:

Endoscopic thyroidectomy significantly reduces postoperative complaints compared to open surgery.
The axillary endoscopic approach offers the best cosmetic results for patients.
