Summary

Workers handling metalworking fluids (MWFs) frequently experience skin irritation, with hands being the most affected area. Promptly washing off spills may reduce symptoms, but health education on personal hygiene is crucial for preventing dermatitis.

Area of Science:

  • Occupational Health
  • Dermatology
  • Industrial Hygiene

Background:

  • Metalworking fluids (MWFs) containing isoparaffinic hydrocarbons are used in manufacturing.
  • These fluids can cause skin irritation, defatting, and water removal from the skin.
  • Skin problems were recognized in 1994, leading to the use of gloves and cotton liners.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of skin problems in workers exposed to MWFs.
  • To assess the effectiveness of current protective measures and identify preventive strategies.

Main Methods:

  • A study involving 74 male workers exposed to MWFs.
  • Interviews and cutaneous examinations were conducted.
  • Statistical analysis (chi-square test) was used to compare outcomes.

Main Results:

  • 4 severe and 31 mild cases of dermatitis were identified.
  • Hands were affected in 100% of cases, followed by thighs (15.9%) and trunk (11.1%).
  • Workers who washed off spills immediately showed a trend towards fewer symptoms, but the difference was not statistically significant (p=0.051).

Conclusions:

  • Irritant contact dermatitis is a significant issue for workers exposed to MWFs.
  • Good personal hygiene and immediate removal of fluid spills are important.
  • Health education is the primary preventive measure against irritant contact dermatitis in this occupational setting.
