Abstract:
Despite the overall progress in women's health research during the last decade, maternal morbidity and mortality remain understudied. The maternal mortality rate in the United States has not decreased in 20 years, and there is an unacceptable gap in maternal mortality between black and white women. The Safe Motherhood Act for Research and Treatment (SMART Mom Act) was introduced in Congress to address this issue and will focus on research and data collection, safe medications, and education.
