Summary

A whole-body bone scan incidentally revealed a penile implant in a patient with osteoporosis and vertebral fractures. This finding highlights the importance of recognizing penile implants in nuclear medicine imaging.

Background:

  • Whole-body bone scintigraphy is a common imaging technique for evaluating bone pain and fractures.
  • Osteoporosis and vertebral body fractures are prevalent conditions, particularly in older adults.
  • Incidental findings on bone scans can sometimes lead to unexpected diagnoses.

Observation:

  • A patient with osteoporosis and vertebral fractures underwent serial whole-body bone scans using technetium-99m-methylene diphosphonate.
  • The scans incidentally visualized a penile implant, which was more clearly depicted on a delayed scan.
  • The penile implant appeared as a region of photopenia or altered radiotracer uptake.

Findings:

  • Penile implants have not been previously described in the nuclear medicine literature.
