Summary

Elderly individuals, especially those over 60, require special attention for acid-related diseases. Peptic ulcers in older adults can be silent, with increased risks of complications, particularly when using NSAIDs.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Internal Medicine

Background:

  • The aging population, particularly in Japan, necessitates tailored medical approaches.
  • Physiological changes in the elderly gastrointestinal tract are complex and often confounded by disease.
  • Understanding age-related digestive disorders is crucial for effective patient care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the physiological changes associated with aging in the gastrointestinal system.
  • To discuss the epidemiology and unique clinical features of digestive disorders in the elderly.
  • To outline special considerations for managing acid-related diseases and peptic ulcers in older adults.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review focusing on aging, gastrointestinal physiology, and digestive disorders in the elderly.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Analysis of epidemiological data and clinical presentations.
  • Synthesis of management strategies and special considerations.
  • Main Results:

    • Physiological changes due to aging are difficult to distinguish from disease-related changes.
    • Peptic ulcer disease in the elderly often presents silently.
    • The risk of NSAID-induced peptic ulcer complications is elevated in older individuals.

    Conclusions:

    • Caregivers must be aware of the unique challenges in diagnosing and managing acid-related diseases in the elderly.
    • Older adults have a higher risk of severe ulcer complications and poorer tolerance to them.
    • Proactive and specialized management is essential for this demographic.
