Repetitive eye rubbing may cause normal tension glaucoma. A patient

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Neurology

Background:

  • Normal tension glaucoma (NTG) is characterized by optic nerve damage with normal intraocular pressure.
  • The etiology of NTG remains multifactorial and often unexplained.

Observation:

  • A 46-year-old male presented with progressive bilateral optic neuropathy and visual field defects.
  • The patient reported a 20-year history of forceful, bilateral eye rubbing.

Findings:

  • Vision loss in the left eye progressed to no light perception over 4 years.
  • Cessation of eye rubbing halted the progression of optic neuropathy in the right eye.
  • Visual acuity and visual fields stabilized after discontinuing the eye-rubbing habit.

Implications:

  • Eye rubbing should be considered in the differential diagnosis of unexplained progressive optic neuropathy.

  • This case suggests a potential mechanical etiology for certain cases of normal tension glaucoma.
  • Further research is warranted to explore the link between eye rubbing and glaucoma development.
