Summary

The Denonvilliers fascia contains nerves extending from the neurovascular bundles to the prostate. This finding supports systematic removal of the recto-vesical septum during radical prostatectomy for cancer.

Area of Science:

  • Anatomy
  • Urology
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • The recto-vesical septum, also known as Denonvilliers fascia, is an anatomical structure situated between the rectum and the bladder.
  • It is often dissected and separated from the prostate and bladder during procedures like radical prostatectomy.
  • The neurovascular bundles, crucial for erectile function, lie laterally to this septum.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the presence and pathway of nerves within the recto-vesical septum.
  • To determine if nerves cross the septum from the neurovascular bundles to the prostate.

Main Methods:

  • Cadaveric dissection was performed to visualize the anatomical structures.
  • Histological examination of the recto-vesical fascia was conducted to identify neural elements.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Nerves originating from the neurovascular bundles were observed extending into the recto-vesical septum.
  • These nerves were found to terminate within the prostate gland.

Conclusions:

  • The recto-vesical septum is innervated by nerves originating from the neurovascular bundles.
  • Systematic removal of the recto-vesical septum during radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer is recommended based on these anatomical findings.
