Summary

Localized amyloidosis of the nasopharynx is rare and can cause hearing loss. Conservative management is recommended for localized nasopharyngeal amyloidosis when systemic disease is absent.

Background:

  • Amyloidosis, a condition involving abnormal protein deposits, can manifest in the head and neck.
  • Localized amyloidosis is a rare, benign form, distinct from systemic amyloidosis which significantly impacts prognosis.

Observation:

  • A case of nasopharyngeal amyloidosis presented with conductive hearing loss and serous otitis media with effusion.
  • Nasopharyngeal amyloidosis can also cause epistaxis, nasal obstruction, and eustachian tube dysfunction.

Findings:

  • Nasopharyngeal amyloidosis is challenging to treat due to recurrence potential and bleeding risks associated with surgical interventions.
  • There is no evidence that surgical treatment improves survival or that localized forms progress to systemic disease.

Implications:

  • Conservative management, including tympanostomy tubes and observation, is a viable option for localized nasopharyngeal amyloidosis.
  • Excluding systemic involvement through biopsy is crucial for determining appropriate treatment strategies.
