Summary

Ultrasonography-guided interstitial laser photocoagulation (ILP) significantly reduced benign thyroid nodule volume and related symptoms. This minimally invasive treatment offers a promising alternative for patients unsuitable for surgery.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Minimally Invasive Procedures
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Benign solitary solid cold thyroid nodules can cause cosmetic concerns and compressive symptoms.
  • Surgical intervention, while effective, carries risks and may not be suitable for all patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the efficacy of ultrasonography (US)-guided interstitial laser photocoagulation (ILP) in reducing the volume of benign solitary solid cold thyroid nodules.
  • To evaluate the impact of ILP on nodule-related symptoms.

Main Methods:

  • Sixteen patients with benign solitary solid cold thyroid nodules underwent a single session of US-guided ILP.
  • Nodule volume and thyroid function were monitored pre- and post-treatment (1, 3, and 6 months).
  • A control group of 15 untreated patients was followed for comparison.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Mean thyroid nodule volume decreased significantly from 10 mL to 5.4 mL after 6 months (P <.001).
  • Compressive symptoms related to the nodules were significantly reduced (P =.0002).
  • No significant nodule volume change occurred in the control group.

Conclusions:

  • US-guided ILP is an effective and well-tolerated treatment for benign solitary solid cold thyroid nodules.
  • This technique presents a viable nonsurgical option for patients who are poor surgical candidates.
