Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Neurosurgery

Background:

  • Hypocalcemia frequently complicates thyroidectomy.
  • Identifying risk factors is crucial for patient management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence of hypocalcemia post-thyroidectomy.
  • To evaluate clinical, biologic, and surgical factors associated with hypocalcemia.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 265 patients undergoing thyroidectomy.
  • Assessment of preoperative and postoperative calcium, phosphorus, free thyroxine, and thyrotropin levels.
  • Evaluation of patient demographics, surgical extent, and parathyroid status.

Main Results:

  • Hypocalcemia occurred in 16% of patients (42/265).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Significant univariate risk factors included elevated free thyroxine, bilateral thyroidectomy, parathyroid autotransplantation, and female gender.
  • Multivariate analysis identified elevated free thyroxine, bilateral thyroidectomy, and parathyroid autotransplantation as independent risk factors.
  • Conclusions:

    • Bilateral thyroidectomy, elevated free thyroxine, and parathyroid autotransplantation are independent predictors of post-thyroidectomy hypocalcemia.
    • Oral calcium supplementation may aid in early hospital discharge for at-risk patients.
